The Woolly Bugger Roaster of Fine Coffee was established in 2002 and is Northern Michigan’s newest roaster retailer of gourmet coffee. Situated in downtown Harbor Springs, Michigan, owners Darrell and Kathi Lavender feel privileged to reside and own a roasting company and coffee shop in one of the country's finest small towns.

A second location, Woolly Bugger of Charlevoix, was opened in the early summer of 2004, and operates under the same ownership and quality principles of the original Woolly Bugger. By opening more locations, the Woolly Bugger team hopes to educate their guests in the ways of fine coffees, as well as create a comfortable atmosphere for guests to relax as they enjoy one of the many fine beverages offered.

The Woolly Bugger uses the finest Arabica beans from around the world for our gourmet coffee. These include: regular, Swiss-water decafe, organic, Shade-grown, and flavored coffees. As a micro roaster, we roast and blend to meet the special needs of our customers and truly guarantee the quality and freshness of our product and service excellence. Our emission control equipment allows us to roast beans where smoke associated with bean roasting is mitigated and aromas of fresh roasted beans remain for your enjoyment.

According to legend an Arabian goatherd named Kaldi found his goats dancing joyously around a dark green leafed shrub with bright red cherries in the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Kaldi soon determined that it was the bright red cherries on the shrub that were causing the peculiar euphoria and after trying the cherries himself, he learned of their powerful effect. The stimulating effect was then exploited by monks at a local monastery to stay awake during extended hours of prayer and distributed to other monasteries around the world. Coffee was born.

The Woolly Bugger is a streamer fly used in fly fishing. It’s one of the most versatile and internationally known flies used in the rivers and streams across the world. While our coffee shop reflects Northern Michigan in a fly fishing theme, the connection between the world of coffee and fly fishing come together in the simplest of terms…whether your sipping your espresso, savoring a cup of coffee, or standing waist deep in a chalk stream…….you are separated for a moment from ordinary things.
